Following our trip up Pike's Peak, we drove to the nearby area whose beauty has led to its being preserved as a Natural National Landmark. Its name, strangely, came from the suggestion of a young surveyor (a Mr Beach) who thought it might be a good place for a beer garden, whereupon his fellow worker (Rufus Cable) said it would be good to name it Garden of the Gods. The hills and other striking "sculptures" (what else could you call them?) are of sandstone conglomerate. It is truly an awsome spot.
