In this first group of photos we show you the ancient heritage of Dublin. It was already a flourishing little town when the Vikings visited it (they stayed a while!). Of first prioity was our visit to see The Book of Kells, one of the few still existing and certainly most famous of copies of the Gospels produced by Irish monks about 800 AD. Photography of course was not permitted, but we do have some shots of previously reproduced cover pages (photos 2 - 5). The next visit was to the Dublin Castle and surrounds (pics 7 - 12). Christ Church Cathedral (Sitriuc, Norse king of Dublin with Dúnán, the first bishop of Dublin, founded it, a Viking church, around 1030.) is shown in pics 13 - 24, and the final two are of St Patricks Cathedral. Both these are Church of Ireland, i.e., Anglican. Their choirs go back a long way and sang together in the first performance of Handel's "Messiah." (yes, it was first performed in Ireland).
