These pictures are from Tortuguero Park, on the east coast of Costa Rica. Except for the little town of Tortuguero situated on a barrier island on the Caribbean, the park consists of 47,00 acres of rain forest, the Tortuguero River, and canals. Transportation is entirely by boat, and our access to the lodge in the jungle where we stayed was a three hour boat trip. The lengthy circle on the right side of the map in photo 1 is the area in which we travelled. The snowy egret in photo 3 our guide pointed out migrates to Costa Rica from the U.S. Photo 5 is a break in the barrier island looking into the Caribbean, and numbers 20 and 21 are the sea behind the town of Tortuguero. Hanging in the tree shown in photo 6 are the long nests of the Montezuma Oropendola, a yellow tailed bird some 18-20 inches long.. There are also a couple of monkeys in those trees, shown larger in the next photo. These are Howler monkeys, which woke us at about 5:30 the next morning with their noise. In 9, 10 and 16 there are caimans, related to crocodiles. 22 through 27 are from the lodge where we stayed, and number 26 contains a hummingbird nest in a bush beside the dining room.
